The base of the chamber is engraved with laser etched perpendicular lines into the rhodium surface fused to the glass base of the counting chambers. This design achieves a bright counter grating that is highly visable when used with a standard microscope.
The improved Neubauer ruling pattern has a full grid of nine squares, the central square of which is further divided up into 25 squares. These are in turn further divided onto 16 squares. The grid has specific dimensions that make it possible to count the number of cells in a specific volume of solution contained within the counting chamber.
